If you are looking to paint walls, it requires plenty of tools. I’ll be showing you a list of these tools including my selection of what painting tools for walls to go with.

Whether it’s painting walls for one room or the entire house, you need to make sure you have what you need. Sure, the selection process is something you’ve already kept top of mind. Especially when you’ve already done something similar with choosing the right paint.

When choosing the right paint, it depends on the type you want and why it’s the best option. You can choose a paint depending on how much traffic that part of the house gets. Of course, there is also the color that you’ll want to consider.

Whether you have chosen the paint you want or not, it’s just as important to find the right tools. The list I will be providing you are tools that I highly recommend you use for almost every paint job.

I’ll explain why each tool is important and recommend a product to go with. You may be on a budget or searching for the best quality tool possible.

Before we get to the list, I’ll also put together a buyer’s guide on what you’ll want to consider before making a purchase.

Tools you don’t need and why?

Painting tools for walls

Before we discuss the tools that you do need, I want to go over a small list of tools that I think are not needed. Let’s talk about each one and why they are not necessary:

Plastic tray liners

The tray you’ll use will probably be made from hard plastic or more sturdier materials. At the same time, you don’t want to add more waste to your project.

Paint key

While it can open up paint cans, it’s not needed. Instead, opt for a flathead screwdriver since they are useful for doing the same task.

Plastic roller tubes

I wouldn’t go for these. Instead, wrap the roller in plastic and store it in a plastic bag that has an air-tight seal.

Paint pads

These are unnecessary until they are absolutely needed in some situations. For example, if you are painting the bathroom and need to get around the toilet tank, that would be the only time to use paint pads.

Otherwise, don’t use them for almost every paint project you do.

Buying Guide: What To Consider When Purchasing Painting Tools For Walls

To help you find the best painting tools for walls, I’m putting together this buyer’s guide so the selection process is easier for you. I can understand how frustrating it can be trying to find the right tools.

However, if you take the following into consideration, you’ll be able to find the purchasing process a lot easier. With that said, let’s discuss what you need to look for:

Price

Obviously, there will be those who are looking for painting tools on a budget. You might be one of them.

Remember that price and quality will usually go hand in hand. Cheaper may mean poor quality while expensive means best quality. That may not always be the case sometimes.

The point here is to make sure you find the best quality tools you can afford based on your budget. It wouldn’t be wise to sacrifice quality because you want to save money.

Intent and purpose (and is it necessary)

When selecting a painting tool, it’s important to understand why you need it. At the same time, you need to know the purpose that it serves.

In other words, decide whether or not it’s a necessary tool to use or not in certain situations. For example, if you are new to painting, should you go for a paint edging tool or go for painter’s tape?

Yes, the intent is to make the paint job as clean and professional as possible.

However, a paint edging tool may be a challenge to use at first even for beginners. With the right practice, you will get the hang of it.

Depending on your skill level with interior painting, it may come down to choosing one or the other despite the intent and purpose being the same.

Materials

This focuses more on quality and longevity. Some materials will be sturdier and therefore last longer. Some may be not so sturdy and may easily break.

So it is important to consider which materials are better in quality so you won’t have to buy replacement tools ever so often (and throw out more money in the process).

Size and shape

Some tools will come in different shapes and sizes. You could have extension poles in different lengths. You could have triangular edgers instead of the usual rectangular ones.

Depending on the tool, there will usually be different shapes and sizes to choose from. If you are looking for an extender for a paint roller, consider which one will be better depending on how far away you are from where the wall meets the ceiling.

If it’s not easily accessible by ladder, you may need to use an extender. Otherwise, if it’s easier to reach, there may be no need.

Replacement parts

There are parts that are replaceable and disposable. You’ll want to make sure they are readily available and at a good price. Otherwise, they may not be so abundant but can also be expensive.

In case of the latter, it may be important to conserve those replacement parts and clean them when you are finished with using them. Specifically, I’m talking about paint roller pads or even pads for paint edgers.

They can be easily replaced. However, you may not need to replace them if you can easily clean any dry paint off of them. Otherwise, feel free to switch them if you are inclined to do so.

Remember, some of these replacement parts can last long before they can be changed out. It’s better to waste less and conserve as much as possible in order to save yourself time and money.

8 Painting Tools For Walls You Will Need

Now, I’m going to show you a list of eight painting tools for walls that you’ll need. Each one of these tools is essential and I’ll explain why.

I’ll also give you my choice on which product to go with. That way, you might save yourself a bit of time choosing between one item or the next. Let’s dive right into the list:

Painter’s Tape

The first thing on the list is painter’s tape. This is used to create a seal and prevent paint from getting on your ceiling, moldings, trim, and even fixtures.

It will keep things nice and clean and you won’t have to deal with any messes. If you are new to painting, I highly suggest getting this.

Over time, you may settle for a paint edger and the painter’s tape might be used for rare occurrences. This kind of tape comes in different sizes of thickness.

However, I’d prefer the ScotchBlue brand as it’s reliable and definitely helps me keep it within the lines. Plus, you’ll get a good package deal (be it a 2 or 3 pack deal). Whatever fits your budget, that’s the kind of painter’s tape you want to have.

Paint edger tool

If you are looking for something that will give you much cleaner edges, a paint edger tool will be sufficient. If you want something that will give your painting projects that professional look, I highly suggest something like a paint edger tool.

Once you get the hang of using it, you might be using painter’s tape less than normal. These are small and rectangular while some of them are triangular and designed for tighter corners.

They come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and materials. However, if you want one that won’t break the bank and provide you with excellent reliability, the Shur-Line Interior/Exterior Pad Painter might be the best possible option for you.

Wall cleaner

The last thing you ever want to do is paint with a dirty wall. So it would make sense to get a wall cleaner. Clean the wall free from any dust, dirt, and grime and you’ll have a surface that will be easier to paint.

Spic and Span or anything similar will be a good wall cleaner to use. Just wipe down whatever is necessary. Another option is this dust mop / wall cleaner kit – Microfiber Dust Mop Wall Cleaner Kit.

Brushes and rollers

Obviously, a paint job can’t be done without brushes and rulers. You might be able to find them in different sizes as well. If you are looking to aim for a more professional look with less imperfections, a roller could be a good tool to have.

If you are looking for excellent quality brushes and rollers that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, I recommend the Pro Grade brand. They have a set of microfiber rollers and a five-set of paintbrushes in different sizes.

The paintbrush set will be convenient since you won’t have to track down a specific size. You’ll have all the common sizes in one package, saving you time and a lot of money.

Roller trays

In the event if you are using rollers, you’re going to need durable trays that can handle the paint you are using. Contrary to popular belief, metal trays are not the best option.

Instead, I’d go with a hard plastic. To help you choose the best ones, I highly suggest you get the Cascade Tools Hard Shell Paint Trays

You get ten trays and they can handle many 9 inch rollers. On top of that, you get more bang for your buck. Ten paint trays for a good price is not that hard to come by.

Plus, you get plenty in one pack. So disposing of them shouldn’t be a problem if you want to use another one.

Plastic buckets

OK, so you’re not going with rollers? Just brushes? No problem, it’s your painting project.

So with that said, you want hard plastic buckets that are excellent in quality and easy to clean. If you want something that is durable and won’t leak on you so easily, I highly suggest that you go with the Leaktite 1-Gallon White Plastic Paint Pail.

Extension poles

These will come in handy if and when you need to paint hard to reach places such as high walls. Some roller extensions will be at least two feet in length and easily extendable.

The height between you on top of the ladder and the wall you are trying to paint should be taken into consideration. One extension pole that I highly recommend is the EXTEND-A-REACH Multi-Purpose Telescopic Extension Pole.

What I like about this one is that it’s available at different maximum heights. You can get one with a maximum extendable length of 3 feet. Other lengths include but are not limited to 8, 12, 18, 24, and 30 feet.

Of course, you can choose which extendable length works for you best. Also, the longer the extension is, the higher in price it will be.

Ladder

Finally, you’re going to need a sturdy ladder that will support your weight (including what you’ll also be carrying up to the top). Many ladders are made from aluminum or fiberglass and prove their worth in terms of sturdiness.

Of all the painting tools, this one is perhaps the most expensive. Decide on which ladder height to go with, first of all. And remember, if the area you want to paint is higher, you could get away with an extension roller.

Always remember safety first especially when painting on top of a ladder. My recommendation is this EdMaxwell Step Ladder. It can support up to 500 pounds, provides non-slip rubber feet at the bottom and handrails for additional safety.

Conclusion

I hope this guide on painting tools for walls has helped you. As I have included product recommendations, I hope they are a big help to you as well.

Having the right kind of tools for every painting project is important. The eight items I have listed above are a must have. I wouldn’t want to start an interior painting project without them.
